It’s sweltering hot in the city, with the streets and walls storing the heat until late in the evening. Wondering where you can keep a cool head? High up in the mountains! Where the air is crisp, and the mountain streams are refreshing. We’ll reveal the best summit tips for you.

Fancy climbing ever higher?

A great choice, especially in summer! Do you already have an idea where your next mountain tour will take you? No? Then we at südtirol privat have the best tips for keeping cool.

Up to Lake Rodella/Radlsee

Located above Latzfons, it’s a popular destination on hot days: Lake Rodella/Radlsee at 2,250 metres. The easiest route starts at Kühhof in Latzfons and leads through forests and meadows to the lake in 2 to 2.5 hours. Radlsee hut sits just above it. And if you’ve got half an hour to spare, you should definitely climb up to the summit of Mt Monte del Pascolo/Königsanger (2,439 metres) – the panorama is spectacular! Afterwards, you’ve certainly earned a refreshing dip in the cool waters of Lake Rodella/Radlsee.

Magical sunrise on Mt Villadro/Villanderer Berg

Hiking before the heat envelops nature? Perfect, we think. We therefore recommend a sunrise tour up Mt Villadro/Villanderer Berg at 2,509 metres. The trail takes just under 3 hours from the Gasserhütte hut above Villanders across the wide Alpine pastures and past the Totenkirchl and Lake Dei Morti/Totensee to the top of the mountain. Please enquire about the time of sunrise in advance and plan enough time to watch the play of colours before the first rays of sunshine – this is usually even more beautiful than the sunrise itself!
By the way: Mt Villadro/Villanderer Berg is considered the geographical centre of South Tyrol!

For real mountain enthusiasts: Mt Picco della Croce/Wilde Kreuzspitze

It’s the queen of the Fundres/Pfunderer mountains, a real challenge for all summit seekers: Mt Picco della Croce/Wilde Kreuzspitze at 3,132 metres. You can reach it via several routes – probably the best-known is the one from the Malga Fane/Fane Alm near Vals via Rifugio Bressanone/Brixner hut. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach Rifugio Bressanone/Brixner hut and then another 2 hours to climb Mt Picco della Croce/Wilde Kreuzspitze. If you’d like to try an alternative route, you can also ascend from Val Ridanna/Ridnauntal valley via Rifugio Vipiteno/Sterzinger hut – this route is longer but less steep. Whichever path you take, once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Lake Selvaggio/Wilder See and the surrounding peaks – and pleasantly mild temperatures.
